“I order a Gin and Tonic,” I tell Birdyman, “and look what I get—” I show him the Spanish balloon glass full of ice, garnished with strips of cucumber - “a bloody salad.”

 

“You sound like such an old git,” he says reprovingly.

 

Tim and I go way back, but I feel he has missed something in my tone. I don’t really have anything against the way the drink is served. In fact I love everything about it - it’s just a voice you fall into with old friends, marking the passage of time and the way the world has changed around us with a pretend sourness: these young people, with their vinyl and their beards and tats, and their craft beers… and now this lovely bowl-full of iced gin with a garnish of cucumber, Barcelona-style: what’s happened to the world?
